The Dog Blog

Hello and glad to have you here!

Vibrant Rusty

I’m a small hobby breeder of American Cockapoo puppies for service, therapy & family pets. These guys are all-around wonderful animals for the average family, those wanting to do therapy work (either paid or volunteer) and those in need of a smaller-sized service dog able to sit in a lap in a wheelchair for example, to retrieve dropped items, etc. Cockapoos make excellent Rally dogs for the novice and a great obedience dog for the casual competitor or an older child getting into that wonderful hobby.

If you’d like to see any of our puppies or adults you can visit our website at AmericanCockapoo.com As we don’t have many litters a year if you’d like any help deciding if a breeder is producing sound pups please ask! I have helped many families do preliminary evaluations of breeders local to them. Since the Cockapoo is a crossbred dog there are more terrible breeders than good ones out there. It isn’t possible to find a breeder with championed dogs or working titles. There are now Therapy dog competitions through the AKC and that can be an excellent place to start looking for your future therapy puppy. For a family pet you will need to interview carefully. Remember that you are not buying a dog you are  buying the breeder. All puppies are cute and sweet. What you want is a puppy that will become an adult dog (that will live to a ripe old age in good health with sound temperament and the qualities expected for the breed). Look carefully, friends, and you won’t be sorry!

Having spent about 16 years training dogs (volunteer work and hobby) I have decided to post a blog about all our wonderful dog adventures here at Eden Orchards. Rusty and babyThis blog also gives information about the proper health, grooming, nutrition and maintenence of your cockapoo dog. There are also several good money-saving tips throughout the blog, as there are many products out there to take your money unneccesarily. The vast majority of the information in this Blog is applicable to most dog breeds, and the purpose of this site is to help educate and inform dog owners so they can get the most out of their best friend(s)!!

I do give a lot of general dog advice intended for the average pet owner. Please always refer to your dog’s specific breed. Dogs are animals very carefully selectively bred for specific purposes. A dog is an animal with a job. What is your dog’s job? They may be the same species of animal, but dog breeds can be very different from one another. From what motivates them to what is behind their adorable behavior, different breeds can need very breed-specific training. So lots of basics cover most basic dog care for the average pet owner, but always learn about your specific breed.

If you have that All American Dog (the mixed-breed rescue) then consider having a genetic test done to identify what breeds might make up your dog! I’m not sure how accurate these tests are, but there are a few available and they are non-invasive and not expensive. It can definitely be a fun experience and can give you valuable information about your dog’s needs, health risks and motivations. DNA tests for dogs are no longer cost prohibitive and should always be done on breeding dogs. It is also not a bad idea to have them done on your Calla5pet or working dog. If you look at the many labs’ websites that offer tests you can search the specific heritable disorders for your breed and look at the price and the method of testing (cheek swab or blood sample). All breeds have genetic disorders and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling dogs (and being unethical in the process). Check out Optigen. They are a top-notch laboratory. Mars Corp does the breed identification test, I believe.

With regards to this blog I will stick to giving specific advice in my field of expertise (Cockapoos) but one day soon I hope to also share with you all the adventures I have going into the performance dog world! Anyone ever run an agility course? That is wonderful fun. Unfortunately Cockapoos are a bit too much the couch potato for that kind of work, but they are biddable enough to run the courses with me for fun, the little poofs! I will need to find myself the perfect agile little dog and as any of you who know me well this means it is Border Collie time! (I love BC dogs as much as I love Cockapoos ) A BC is not a dog I would ever recommend to an average home as they are extremely active and intelligent (when bred properly) but they make amazing companions for those homes that have a lot of interest in finding work for these wonderful animals. If you’ve ever considered seriously competing for Rally, obedience, agility or flyball this is the breed for you! Stay tuned because over the next few years I will be posting all my adventures-from finding the perfect working dog to learning all the ins and outs of agility to going to my very first competitions. I won’t pretend I have any kind of expertise when it comes to any other breed specifics, but it will be great to start learning! Maybe after a decade (or two) I will be able to have as much knowledge about this lovely breed as I do with Cockapoos. BC have so much wonderful history and because they are a breed with a difficult job there is a lot to learn. Finding mentors, excellent training academies, and all of that stuff will be a great learning experience and I hope that it will help me pass that information on to my dog-loving readers, and I have a feeling I will have fun sharing all the sure-to-be bumps in the road along the way!

7Please read and enjoy this website and use it as a tool to help you better understand your pooch. The better trained your dog is, the happier and more enjoyable the human-dog relationship. Pets can be wonderful for your health when they are properly trained. And training is not as hard as you might think! And, of course, there is no one “right way” to train a dog! Many different positive training methods are successful. There are great resources available for the varied methods. I happen to like clicker training, personally. I hope to blog my adventures of clicker training a new puppy soon for you!

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me: edenorchards@gmail.com  I’m here to help! If you have any tips of your own I’d love to hear them, as well. I’m continually learning new things. I know I don’t post often, as things are very busy here at the homestead, but I do hope to post more regularly in the future. Thanks for stopping by :-)

God Bless

Make a Slinky Dog Toy

While Megan from Brassy Apple was on vacation with her family, her sister came up with a fun project! Her son was watching Toy Story and really wanted a slinky dog, so she took a dog and a slinky and combined them! For extra durability you might want to try this with a plastic slinky, which will stand up to more adventures that its easily-bent metal counterpart. [how to make a slinky dog toy]

Project estimate:

  • Stuffed dog toy, $ 1

  • Slinky, $ 1 and up

  • Needle and thread, on hand

Total: $ 2 and up

The Dutch Dog Design blog

Hello DoggyRide friends and followers; we would like to share a story about one of our very own that has fallen on hard times.

Meet Logan, a three-year old chocolate Labrador retriever in the prime of his life who, until very recently, had the world by the tail.

Logan the chocolate lab enjoys his jogger-stroller

Logan happily sits inside the comfort of his Novel dog jogger-stroller

Logan was a superior athlete with boundless energy, loved running with his best friend Adam, and had a deep passion for the game of Chuckit! Logan and Adam were also in the last stages of earning their search and rescue certificate with the King County Sheriff’s Department. Many hours had been dedicated to the idea that one day Logan could possibly save the lives of a missing person or persons.

Logan was a spirited puppy with a playful disposition, and intelligence to boot, but nobody could imagine what would happen next.

On July 5, 2013 while on vacation in Coeur d’Alene, ID, Logan awoke to a deep cough and troubled breathing. He was rushed to a local veterinary clinic nearby as it was thought he may have eaten something poisonous earlier that evening. Although the veterinarian was unsure of the diagnosis, he recommended that Logan get an MRI scan on his chest cavity to be certain of a cause. Logan and his parents made the trip to Washington State University and their renowned vet school, some two hours away, to meet with a leading animal cardiologist. After receiving the results of the MRI scan, Logan was diagnosed with Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy or CDC (http://www.2ndchance.info/dogdilcardiomyopathy.htm).

For the majority of dogs afflicted with this condition, heart failure will be caused by the enlarging of the heart thus creating the inability for the heart to pump the necessary amounts of blood through the body. The life expectancy for canines diagnosed with this condition is short, and in Logan’s case is six-12 months. This was a shock to Logan’s family and would immediately change Logan’s life and the activities he loved so very much.

Since Logan’s diagnosis, he was forced to retire from the King County search and rescue program and can no longer play Chuckit! to the extent which he once did. His long runs have been cut back to short walks and his athleticism has been curbed due to his early signs of fatigue. The puppy that once had the world by the tail is now fighting to live a little bit longer.

When speaking with Logan’s family, they have mentioned that they live by the philosophy of “quality over quantity” and allow Logan to be Logan as much as they can without Logan over exerting himself.

We hope that every dog owner and puppy enjoy life to the fullest, each and every day; because it is fleeting and you never know, like Logan, when it will all be taken away. Here’s to you, buddy!

Menno lives each day to the fullest, with the help of his DoggyRide Nove jogger-stroller

We continue to thank you for being a loyal part of our DoggyRide family.

Many happy tail wags from our family to yours,

Time flies when we’re keeping busy!

Recently, in May, Dutch Dog Design owner and designer, Matthys van Leeuwen attended the Interzoo trade show in Nuremberg, Germany with a colleague from our Netherlands office.

This trade show was a great way for half of our team to interact and form new relationships with the international pet product buying community, as well as receive feedback on new products and changes which are waiting for début.

Dutch Dog Design

Dutch Dog Design products galore. Including dog bike trailers, strollers, elevated dog beds and eco-friendly dog leashes and collars.

Overall, this is a great experience in which all of us at Dutch Dog Design learned a lot about the community who uses our products as well as better serving our customers and innovating for the future.

We’re always willing to listen and love to hear what you’ve got to share. Your insights are important. They help us make even better products in the future.

More recently and locally in Monroe, WA, we attended Seattle Pug Rescue’s Pug Gala 2012. It was pug-errific! It was so great to see so much pug passion in one room! We enjoyed watching the Pug Parade, the Pug Races and meeting many cute visitors. It was great to chat with some many pug-loving visitors and learn about their pugs’ needs and how they could use our dog bike trailers, dog strollers, or other products such as our elevated dog beds and collars and leashes for further benefit. We learned that harnesses are much more popular than collars, given pug neck sizes in relation to head sizes. We don’t have harnesses yet, but hopefully, inspired by these precious pugs, we will have them available one day in the future.

Hello, beautifuls!

We met some pug-tastic friends at Pug Gala! Hello, lovelies!

These are just a few things that have kept us busy and on our toes!

Up next, in September, is Seattle Humane Society’s Walk for the Animals 2012.

Hooray!

We’ve kept very busy lately! We’ve worked very hard to complete our new Outdoors & Lifestyle catalog and it is now finished! We hope this provides everyone with plenty of information on our DoggyRide dog bike trailers and dog strollers, DoggySnooze elevated dog beds, Dutch Dog Amsterdam eco-friendly collars and leashes, our values and mission, and more!

Please take a look and share your thoughts.

Thank you!

This photo is too cute to bear, we’ve got to share it.

Ringo the French bulldog enjoys a rest on the snoozeSleeper dog bed

Ringo the French bulldog enjoys a rest on the snoozeSleeper dog bed

Neil Sedaka once sang, “breaking up is hard to do” but, is it as hard as leaving your precious pooch at home while you go to work every morning? Surely with that sweet face and those beady little eyes, it is just as hard.

A sign of the times, more and more workplaces are recognizing the health and business benefits of bringing dogs to work and slowly across America, more workplaces are filled with 2-legged workers and their 4-legged canine companions.

Now, with dogs by their sides, employees need not fret over how their pooches are doing at home, alone. Bringing dogs to work can improve an employee’s health by reducing stress, reducing cortisol levels and increasing happiness.

It is also important to remember and consider a dog’s health when bringing it to work, though. Dogs sleep anywhere from 12 to 18 hours per day, or 50% to 75% of the day. With so much lying around going on, it’s important for a dog to have a healthy and comfortable dog bed on which to rest and sleep. When sleeping, some dogs like to stretch out and lay against something, others like to curl into a corner, and some like to rest their heads on something soft and elevated. Remember all those times your dog fell asleep next to you on the couch with its head propped on your lap?

Elevated dog beds are an excellent, healthy option for your dog’s bed. DoggySnooze beds, for example, are elevated which means that your pal doesn’t have to sleep on the floor, while also increasing air flow around the bed and the dog helping to reduced condensation and keep a dog cool and dry, and keep the floor around the bed much cleaner.

The snoozePad and snoozeSleeper dog bed models come with bed layers for the dog to sleep on with the option to add a 1” thick orthopedic memory foam mattress as well, while the snoozeLounge and snoozeSofa dog bed models come with the 1” thick orthopedic memory foam mattress standard. Having a healthy back and spine isn’t just a human thing, it’s a dog thing too.

For those of you who are looking for multiple customization options, designs abound with DoggySnooze beds. Elevation options, bed layer color options and bolster color options can be made to fit with most any office’s décor. The bed elevation can be changed from short to tall. For dogs that like to stretch against something while sleeping, a bed with one back bolster is an excellent option as it provides a comfortable place to rest with the addition of a support to lay against and open sides to allow for plenty of sprawling.

Menno enjoys his DoggySnooze snoozeLounge in our office

Menno enjoys his DoggySnooze snoozeLounge in our office

On the other hand, if you’ve got a dog that likes to snuggle into corners and sometimes rest its head on something, a bed with a side and back bolsters is a great option as the side and back bolsters offer multiple options for places to snuggle and many places where a dog can rest its head.

Going out for a doggy break will give both of you a bit of mid-morning or mid-afternoon exercise and time to get outside for some fresh air. Don’t forget some tasty treats and terrific toys to help keep your dog entertained during the day.

Also don’t forget to mind your doggy’s manners when back indoors. Keep him on a leash when not inside your office or cubicle as to not disrupt other office mates and remember to keep Fido secured during those meeting or conference calls.

Day and night, Menno gets to test out the DoggySnooze dog beds and with that, inspire product innovations and redesigns. In fact, the DoggySnooze snoozeSleeper was inspired by Menno’s love of sprawling out in his sleep and desire to rest against something. The elevation of the snoozeSleeper allows for Menno to not have to sleep on the floor and experience increased airflow under the bed and around his body, keeping his fluffy body cool, dry, and comfortable while also reducing condensation. The interior foam, and optional additional memory foam give him a healthy and orthopedic place to rest and be comfortable.

On weekends, Menno enjoys exploring the parks and trails of the beautiful Pacific Northwest with his owners while riding in his DoggyRide Novel dog bike trailer. With his own personal sunroof unzipped, he can enjoy the fresh air and wind in his fur just like any dog should. Many afternoons are then spent hiking and exploring the trail, chasing after a few sticks and even meeting some new furry friends.

DoggyRide Novel dog bike trailer exploring the outdoors

Menno enjoy the beautiful views and fresh air from his DoggyRide Novel dog bike trailer.

When venturing out for a stroll to the local dog park a bit closer to home, Menno enjoys accompanying his avid bike rider owner. Without the necessity of a trailer for longer trips, Menno is safely attached to his owner’s bike via the Buddy hands free dog leash connector. This way, his owner can focus on safely riding his bike, without having to focus on leading a dog on a leash in his hands at the same time. With the Buddy, Menno is once again fulfilling his duties as Chief Inspirational Officer as he also inspired this product’s creation. Seeing that Menno was afraid of using a different, more obtrusive dog leash connector, his owner decided to craft something that was easier to use with a much simpler design. The Buddy can be looped onto a bicycle, belt loop or backpack while its other end is clipped to a dog’s leash. The Buddy’s bungee material will absorb part of the pull and shock if Menno happens to get a bit too distracted by a wayward squirrel. Upon arriving at the dog park, Menno’s leash is unclasped from the Buddy and the bike and he can go roam the grassy fields with his other doggy pals. Many there’s even a game of pick-up frisbee going on, too?

The Buddy hands free dog leash connector while biking

Menno enjoys a jog as his owner enjoys a bike ride.

The fun doesn’t stop when it’s time to go back to the office. Menno enjoys spending some time outdoors playing with doggy toys and digging up his little buried treasures. He’s even made friends with local delivery drivers who “throw him a bone” which is in all actuality, a tasty doggy treat if he’ll open the front door. Just kidding! Menno gets excited to see his delivery driver pals and will either greet them excitedly or wait patiently to receive a treat.

As you can see, the life of Menno the smiling Samoyed dog is rather arduous, don’t you think? Eat, sleep, treat, repeat; head out for a doggyride somewhere in between? I wouldn’t mind trading places with him for a day.

Thanks, Menno, for being such a delightful canine companion.

Dog with Blog

Diary of an Under Dog

Diary of an Under Dog

Long time no blog…….

Boy have I been busy over the past few months, last time I blogged I was aiming for 500 Twitter followers but have now just passed 1400 (and I love each and every one of you!), my Border Collie World store is going great guns and Ellie & I are still house-mates and having the time of our lives.

I love giving back to my wonderful followers and readers, because without you I would just be blogging into thin air and your comments and support make me so happy. I have just finished my first book, Diary of an Under Dog (The Puppy Years) and I am so excited….it is due for release later this year but because I love you all so much and because I am not very good at waiting, I have been able to team up with the wonderful The Dog Express website in a fabulous giveaway.

The first 8 chapters of my book are being given away to 50 wonderful winners as an ebook and I wanted you guys to be in with a great chance of getting your hand on one.

The question is so easy, even I can answer it and I’m a BORDER COLLIE (hint hint)……….

Just get yourself over to The Dog Express (this link takes you to the right page), answer the question in the comments box and hopefully you will be one of the lucky 50 chosen at random.

I promise now my paws of fire have been extinguished form all the book writing that I will get back to blogging as I have missed you all so much.

Your published – Jay xx

Mum’s got a new tablet and stylus…….which means photograph city for Ellie and I!!!  The finished pic is pretty cute though (not that I’m biased!!!)

Launching a line in designer gifts and cards is exhausting….especially when you design, create, star in and produce the photos (Mum snapped the camera though cos those things are not designed for paws…..)

Just a taster of what we have launched…….

It’s December…so it is officially okay to say ‘Merry Christmas’ from Ellie & I…..

015

I was just casually cruising through Google looking for links to Dog with a Blog (purely for statistical purposes and not because I am vain!!), when I came across quite a few references to my namesake; see The Huffington Post Newspaper for an example.  Imagine my horror that casting has already taken place and yet

“Doth my ears deceive me, or has my phone not rung as of yet!!!”

Have I not proven my ability to act as a canine stunt dog in almost any situation, through my detailed blogs on my agility class antics. I mean obviously, there was the slight hesitation to jump through the swinging tyre…but I can’t see me ever needed to do that in a real life situation…or the need to walk across an A-frame or beam in a calm and controlled manner!  But I was top of the class when it came to standing still and eating the chicken pieces!!!

Is it not clear to all those that I know that no dog is more handsome,    sophisticated, stylish or destined to be on the silver screen than me?

I can only hope that my wonderful and lovely blog & Twitter followers, who have supported me over the past 4 years can see past the miscasting of the global giant that is Disney…..and still love me for who I am (if you read that last paragraph with some piano or violin music playing in the background, it works best!!)

Hope I win a mug for Mum’s birthday…..saves me shopping online again….lol xxxx

Yesterday I apparently stared at the front door for over 30 minutes and because Mum could not see exactly what I was staring at, she told me to stop doing it !!!

At the exact same time Ellie was ripping apart her new bed and shoving the soft, comfy innards into corners of the kitchen that would be impossible to retrieve them from at a later date; however this did not appear to bother Mum quite as much as my front door staring, given that she chose to tell me off and not Ellie….it is apparent that I am missing some strange Human trait here where looking at objects they cannot see is potentially terrifying to them.

I think tonight I will try staring at the patch of floor under Mum’s arm chair and see how long she stays seated, too terrified to move…

Sinister Jay xxx

Once every year, my owner is overcome by the insane notion that I am either going to be attacked by a rabid flying monkey or that the pavements will turn into a blanket of rusty nails just before my evening walk. Why she thinks this is beyond me, however the consequences are that I am whisked off to the dreaded ‘vets’ and thus ensues the horrific event that Mum refers to as having my annual injections.

As any dog will know, the vets is a place of misery, pain and often humiliation (my vet has a particular proclivity for shoving his fingers up my bum!); but this years injection visit bore such humiliation that I searched high and low for a shovel to dig a hole in the ground as my paws were just not fast enough.

I always know when something bad is about to happen because Mum buys corned beef out of what I assume is pre-emptive guilt. Yesterday out came the corned beef; which I stupidly ate after checking no white pills had been hidden inside it! Ten minutes later we were in the car and on the way to the vets. I lay down by Mum’s feet in the waiting room (There is no point creating a fuss as you just get dragged across the floor on your butt and our vet has wool carpets!) and waited for the inevitable to happen. A couple of dogs came out of the dreaded white door with cones on their heads; screaming the age old war cry of ‘where have my balls gone!’. Finally it was our turn.

Mum placed my trembling body onto the vets table as she babbled on about unlimited corned beef and being able to sit on the sofa (I would have relished in the human guilt factor had I not been so terrified.) The vet pushed my head to the left and spewed out the usual load of rubbish that putting the injection in the neck is painless (how I long to shove a ten inch needle into his neck and see if he still thinks it’s painless). It was just before closing my eyes that I noticed something purple lying on the floor. At first I couldn’t quite make out what it was, it looked like an extra large hanky lying right next to Mum’s right shoe. But then Mum moved slightly and the full shape of the object came into view….

I’ve heard about this happening to humans before but never actually seen it with my own eyes. They put their clothes on in a hurry and forget to check what might have become of the previous day’s garments! The vet was stalling with the injection, he’d started talking about his impending holiday to Mum; I poked my paw out at Mum and tried to get her attention. She seemed to think I was beyond petrified and wanted to hold her hand! I didn’t know how to get her to look down….I imagined all of the dogs in the neighbourhood finding out about it; I’d be the laughing stock of the village.  I needed to do something, pick them up and hide them before the vet noticed…

I moved slowly towards the edge of the table and finally got my back end far enough across that gravity did the rest. I slid off the table and onto the floor before anyone could stop me. Using all of my stealth abilities, I flicked my tail in their direction and they soared through the air towards me before anyone noticed. Unfortunately, Mum was still looking at the vet when she bent down, picked me up to put me back onto the table so she did not noticed what was strewn across my head. In my attempt to sweep them under the table, they had in fact landed on top of my head.

It was too late…….Mum and the vet had finally stopped talking and both looked in my direction at the same time. Mum gasped and slapped her hand across her mouth, her cheeks turning a deep shade of red, the vet’s eyes grew as large as saucers and his eyebrows receded into his hairline and there I sat on the veterinary table with a giant pair of Mum’s purple knickers sitting on my head, my ears poking out through the leg holes like a giant purple hat.

Mum had obviously not noticed that morning when getting dressed that the previous days underwear were still lurking in her jeans. Throughout the morning they had made their crafty way down her trouser leg, poised until the perfect moment to drop presented itself. That moment it turned out had been 2 seconds prior to having my annual injection at the vets.

So I would like to take this moment to thank those purple pants from the bottom of my heart for postponing the inevitable injections, if only for a short while. In Mum’s horror, she had lifted me from the table and fled from the vets room with such speed that the purple knickers had flown from my head and landed smack bang in the middle of the coffee table in the vets waiting room, right amidst copies of Dog Today and Womans Own.

I draw a blank to passing considerations, and bureaucratic failings. Failed expectations gnaw and grate my every sense.

When do we accept what is before our very eyes, is truth, no hiding from reality to pain that consumes and binds, guided by interpretation, still your ideals different to mine? We see the same but react differently, honouring the pain that creates subdivisions.

Inspiring…..

One voice is powerful…….a chorus of voices are a powerhouse!

I am one lucky dog to be loved, cared for, fed and given shelter. I am lucky, but thousands of dogs and cats are not as lucky as me. There are hundreds of thousands of animals in rescue shelters and adoption centres who need your support.

Do not dimiss this cause because you are not in a position to give a pet a home. There are so many ways that people can help…..and it is not a gift, it is a duty. Animals cannot speak for themselves, but if they could they would ask for the most basic things in life.

To be loved….

You can give your time, you money, your support….but more importantly, you can give your voice.Make people aware, spread the message, get onboard and be the person that you were put on this earth to be.
